Freedom Camping
Freedom camping is generally permitted but there are restrictions on where you can freedom camp, this does vary between each council district. Pay attention to NO camping signs that prohibit Freedom Camping. Assume Nothing and Ask a local if you are not sure. Experience New Zealand by camping responsibly, this means leaving no trace of your visit, most towns have recycling bins and there is a large number of dump stations throughout New Zealand for emptying toilet and grey water. There are plenty of convenient public facilities in New Zealand – camping responsibly is not using the New Zealand bush as a toilet.

New Zealand is dotted with Holiday Parks offering a wide range of facilities. If you are a relative newcomer to campervans and motorhomes, Holiday parks are a nice easy introduction to a travelling lifestyle. A lot of campgrounds have excellent facilities and activities for young families which can be a welcome break from Freedom Camping.
Remember to book well in advance for any campground in New Zealand, particularly in peak season as this is the traditional exodus of Kiwis flocking from the cities to beaches and campgrounds.
